Medical conditions - Some medical conditions such as dry mouth or gastrointestinal diseases can cause bad breath. If you have dry mouth, the lack of saliva can lead to more bacteria build up than usual, leading to bad breath. Some gastrointestinal diseases may also be linked to bad breath. Diabetes, throat and nose infections, bronchitis, tonsillitis etc. may also cause bad breath.

How to get rid of bad breath

Now that we have looked at the various causes of bad breath, let us also see what can be done to get rid of the problem.

Proper oral hygiene - Nothing beats good old brushing and flossing twice a day. Simply cleaning your teeth and mouth every day can get rid of all the bacteria that is causing bad breath. If there are no underlying medical conditions, oral hygiene may be the only thing that you need to take care of to get rid of bad breath. Use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue. A mouthwash may also help.

Keep your dentures clean - If you wear dentures, you must pay special attention to them. Take them out before going to bed. Make sure that you clean them well before putting them in your mouth again the next day. Check with your dentist about the best way to clean the dentures and store them at night when you are not using them.

Ensure that your mouth is not dry - Some people neglect to drink water throughout the day. This may lead to a dehydrated mouth with very little saliva. Make sure that you drink enough water during the day. Eating healthy food such as apples and carrots that require a lot of chewing can also help generate saliva. You may also try sugar free gum.
